Sagar Chinese (Long Island, NY)

Quality, Taste, Cleanliness, Environment, Price, Staff

PositiveGood quality Indian chinese.  My favorites were lolli pop chicken and hot & sour soup.

Negative: Only two servers for the entire restaurant.

Overall: Above average Indian style chinese with nothing outstanding.

Revisit:   Not a big fan of Indian style chinese so probably not.  If I was a fan then I would if I was in the area.

Like desi style chinese?

I went to a newly opened Desi Style Chinese Restaurant located on Hillside Avenue in Long Island after hearing great things about it from family and friends. It was packed when I went on a holiday night and heard that it is frequently packed all weekend long. The ambiance was calming and the setting was good aside from the large counter in the front with a cash register on it taking away from a fine dining experience.

Because of how busy the restaurant was and only two servers catering tables, we thought it would take a long time for us to order.  It did take a long time to order but they definitely made up for it by bringing the food out pretty quickly. We didn’t, however, receive any utensils, water, or napkins until asking a few times because of how overworked the servers were.

Food was good for a desi style Chinese restaurant, but did not fulfill my desire for American Style Chinese. I did see many Asian cooks and chefs in the back though. The General Tso’s Chicken, my criterion for good American Chinese, was just average.  Their Lollipop Chicken and Hot & Sour Soup were great.  The sauce with the Lollipop chicken was absolutely delicious. (If i lived close by, I would go back to the restaurant just for this appetizer). We had many of the desi style dishes, including Masala Chicken, Chili Chiken, Vegetable Fried Rice, and Vegetable Chow Mein.  They all were good, but not for my taste and actually similar to the Desi Style Chinese in North Brunswick NJ on Route 130 called Chopsticks III.

I think overall the quality was good, the taste was mediocre, and the amount of food they gave was small.  I guess that is why the entrees cost cheaper than other restaurants.  If you like Desi style Chinese then you should definitely try this place out.  It is not worth driving out to if you are not within 30 minutes of the location.   But if your taste buds desire American style Chinese try elsewhere, possibly Fatima’s Kitchen in Astoria or Halal Kitchen in Maspeth.
